Challenge: The room lacked charm and architectural details.
As an interior designer, I saw a lot of potential with this room was excited to put my decorating “super-powers” to work. Here are a few of the key elements that I focused on when re-decorating this space.
Add Architectural Details: Crown molding is a great way to transform a room and add character. The existing crown was too small for the scale of the room. I replaced the existing crown with a 7” crown. This simple modification made the room seem more impressive.
The room’s biggest eyesore was the white brick fireplace wall. Devoid of charm, the brick wall made the space feel cold and impersonal. I wanted to create a more inviting and traditional room. To accomplish this, I covered the exposed brick with sheetrock. I designed a custom Georgian-style mantel, painted it glossy white and accentuated it with a contrasting black granite surround. As a result, the completed fireplace wall looks original to the house, creates a striking focal point, and adds architectural interest to the room.
Reflect the Light: Mirrors do wonders for a room! The existing living room opened up directly into the breakfast room. I wanted to close the wall between the two spaces, but not eliminate the light. My solution was to install a pair of salvaged mirrored French doors. We installed the doors and fabricated two matching mirrored sidelights to build out a “wall of mirrors”. Now the living room sparkles when the afternoon light pours in!
Details Make a Difference: I love using passementerie trim as they are a great way to make drapery or upholstered pieces more special and unique. In this room, I added trim to the bottom skirts of my upholstery and to the edges of the drapery panels. The overall effect adds more color, texture and dimension to the room.
Create a WOW Factor: Artwork is a fast and often cost effective way to add personality to a space. I painted a large abstract piece to hang over the sofa. It is the first thing someone sees when walking into the room and creates a WOW factor.
